Tampa General Hospital Implements OptiVox to Enhance Communication between Caregivers, Improving Patient Safety Tampa, Fla., January 22, 2008The addition of a new hand-off solution at Tampa General Hospital will make shift changes and patient transfers smoother and more efficient. Tampa recently purchased OptiVox® by The White Stone Group, Inc. to standardize hand-off communication enterprise-wide. Communication breakdown at hand-off is known industry-wide as the single largest source of medical error and the root cause of up to 70 percent of sentinel events reported to the Joint Commission. As a result, the Joint Commission emphasizes hand-off compliance, monitoring and training as priorities in National Patient Safety Goals. With OptiVox, hand-off reports can be entered and received at any time, through any telephone. OptiVox is proven to limit interruptions, allow more time for direct patient care and improve quality by reducing patient reporting errors. Results include patient safety improvements such as reductions in patient falls and increased response times to patient call lights. OptiVox Advisor, the management component of OptiVox, is a web-based solution designed to monitor hand-off compliance enterprise-wide. With Advisor, Tampa General Hospital’s managers can audit the entire progression of hand-offs to ensure report quality, accuracy and consistency across the continuum of care. Reports also serve as a resource for training and evaluation of hand-off competency.
