OptiVox Presented at 20th Annual National Forum on Quality Improvement in Health Care

Nashville, Tenn., December 10, 2008

OptiVox was presented as a quality improvement tool at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s Annual National Forum held in Nashville, Tenn., Dec. 9 – 11.

The hand-off communication solution was featured in a posterboard presentation by Phelps County Regional Medical Center, Rolla, Mo.

"In nursing today, we are constantly looking for solutions that allow us to put patient care back at the bedside," said Wrenae Shabel, Ph.D., RN, Chief Clinical Officer at Phelps. "OptiVox does that while improving the quality and efficiency of our hand-offs."

Phelps implemented OptiVox to improve patient safety and satisfaction by streamlining hand-off communication and increasing staff availability for direct patient care.

"OptiVox eliminates the need to 'hunt and peck,' which wastes time as nurses search or wait for another caregiver to give report," said Shabel. "Instead, nurses can enter reports at their convenience and have more time to respond to patients."

Phelps has experienced the following outcomes as a result:

• Saved average of 2.6 minutes per patient hand-off

• Improved patient satisfaction survey responses by 10 points

• Improved hand-off confidentiality by 62%*

• Improved hand-off convenience and efficiency by 39%*

• Reduced transfer time through Emergency Department

• Enhanced quality by monitoring hand-off competency

IHI’s national forum is a professional event designed for leaders and learners interested in improving the quality of healthcare. The event draws approximately 6,500 healthcare leaders from around the world in person and thousands more via satellite broadcast. *Measured by staff responses to hand-off communication survey
