Missouri Nurses Awarded for Achieving Evidence-Based Practice with OptiVox Hand-off Solution

Columbia, Mo., May 1, 2009

Nurses at Phelps County Regional Medical Center (Rolla, Mo.) recently received first place for a poster session highlighting evidence-based practice achieved with the OptiVox hand-off solution.

Evidence-based practice seeks to enhance care delivery and effectiveness by integrating research, clinical guidelines and outcomes assessments into clinical practice. To guide Missouri hospitals in pursuit of evidence-based practice (EBP), the Nursing Outreach program at the Missouri University Sinclair School of Nursing held its annual EBP conference in April. Conference sessions featured the impact of frontline nurses in achieving cultures of quality, safety and nursing professionalism.

Phelps’ nurses Amy Ross, BSN, RN, and Kimberly Weaver, BSN, RN, were voted first place for their poster session, "Streamlining Hand-Offs for Patient Safety and Satisfaction." The poster highlighted evidence-based practice achieved by using OptiVox to improve hand-off accuracy and efficiency across the continuum of care.

Among Phelps' outcomes were a 50 percent reduction in time dedicated to hand-offs, a 62 percent improvement in hand-off confidentiality and a 39 percent improvement in hand-off convenience and efficiency.
